Designated as one of the best places to live by Money Magazine, the township of Maplewood is a quiet residential town which prides itself on being a diverse and family-friendly community. Situated at the base of South Mountain with just a 30 minute commute to Midtown Manhattan via the Mid-town Direct train line, Maplewood is a favorite compromise for those who work in the city, but still desire excellent public schools and their own yards. The public school district has a long tradition of academic achievement and excellence. The district offers a large number of advanced placement courses as well as diverse electives and extracurricular opportunities. The district also features an award winning literary magazine and student newspaper and has received seven regional Emmy Awards by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The township has two separate downtown areas. The bustling Springfield Avenue, which is undergoing a renewal due to an influx of new retail businesses and restaurants, garners a slightly more urban feel. For a quaint, more intimate downtown area, residents gather in “the village”, which is anchored by the train station. “The village” provides many amenities to the residents, including a movie theatre, post office, small supermarket, upscale and mid-scale restaurants, cafes, and small retail shops.
